A woman goes to stay at a friend's hunting lodge, and, come morning, finds herself separated from the rest of the world by an invisible wall. Writing two years on from this discovery, she records her life since - her struggle to survive and care for the animals she tends to, the rhythms of the natural environment, her thoughts and feelings over time. As seasons pass, the wall remains, and she begins to shed the heavy skin of society’s gaze, encountering a kind of freedom. An affecting and profound novel of isolation, the natural world, and what one might find were the oppressive, constraining forces of society to disappear entirely.A woman goes to stay at a friend's hunting lodge, and, come morning, finds herself separated from the rest of the world by an invisible wall. After Kristin Lavransdatter I longed for more, so got out Gunnar's Daughter. Undset styled this short novel in the manner of Icelandic sagas, with laconic prose deployed to great effect. A tragic tale of violence, obsession and revenge, the shocking and brutal events that unfold are intensified by the sparseness of the writing. As with Kristin, I was very interested in the protagonist Vigdis, a woman with remarkable grit, resourcefulness, and heart. Inspires me to move through the world with my back as straight as a sword. After Kristin Lavransdatter I longed for more, so got out Gunnar's Daughter. Beautifully translated by Tina Nunnalley, Kristin Lavransdatter is a singular reading experience. Set in thirteenth century Norway, the novel follows Kristen from her girlhood, to a passionate love that upends societal codes, to marriage and motherhood of seven sons, to her death. Epic in scope, the story shifts between emotional interiority, political intrigue, and transportive descriptions of atmosphere and landscape. Undset’s expansive knowledge of the period comes through in her nuanced portrayal of the settings, customs and culture of Kristin's Norway. Via Kristin's tortuous regrets, atonements, and passion, tensions between the desire for a transcendent spirit and the earthy tethering of the body are rendered absorbing and illuminating. There's something quite remarkable about reading a really long book, especially a saga of this kind, and spending weeks with such a compelling protagonist. I felt transformed by it, by the intimacy with Kristin's loves and sorrows a reader is offered, and by the sense of perspective that comes with witnessing the span of a life.Beautifully translated by Tina Nunnalley, Kristin Lavransdatter is a singular reading experience. I found little in the way of insight, nuance or resonance in Lapvona, which is perhaps the point. Nevertheless, reading this novel felt like a really punishing, pointless slog through a flatly imagined mire of nihilism and abuse. The tone feels unrelenting, a droning litany of bleakness. Cursed, ultimately.I found little in the way of insight, nuance or resonance in Lapvona, which is perhaps the point.
